Seeds Experiments

Leland
Do you know  what seeds need to grow?

This term we have been doing some science experiments and thinking about how seeds grow.

Tuia
We gave one seed water, sun and soil to grow.

Oriah
I see great big green leaves and a bright green stem.

Kaitlyn
I think it will grow big and get healthier because it has everything it needs.

Brooklyn
I wonder why it needs soil and sun and water?

Shayne
Can a seed grow without water?

We gave one seed just sun and soil to grow and….. NO WATER!

Naina
I see nothing. I see soil.
Oliver
I think the seed needs sun. I think it needs soil and water too.
Kayce
I wonder if it’s not going to grow at all or if it’s going to grow later?

Ashton
Can a seed grow without soil?

We gave one seed just water and sun and ….NO SOIL!

Ryley
I see a seed with a little sprout and a root growing out and the root has a black end.
Dylan
I think the water is like milk and the seed is like a baby. I think the seed is sucking up the water like when a baby drinks milk.
James
I wonder why the seed’s skin is coming off  ?
I wonder what plants are for?

Oli

Can a seed grow without sun?

We gave one seed just soil and water and…. NO SUN!

Coredae

I see a tall white sprout and really small yellow leaves at the top of the sprout.

Rylan

I think the plant is a little sick because it is so pale and it needs some sun.

Alex

I wonder how the seed knows it’s dark when we put it in the cupboard?

Our Assembly Item - Seeds

We have been learning about cycles and looking at the plant life cycle.
We have been doing our own science experiments to work out what seeds need to grow.

SOLO helped us with our thinking skills and we used the model:

I See......
I Think.......
I Wonder.......

Last Thursday we had our assembly item and shared with everyone what we have learnt about seeds. Mrs Beach was very proud of us as we were fantastic on stage! Everybody enjoyed our bean dance too!

Check us out in these very cool movies....

In these movies you can't see our slide show so you will have to go to the Seeds Experiments post.

Soccer Training

I liked being the giraffe. I had to hold the ball and stretch up high.
By Oli

I liked balancing the ball on my neck and making it fall off my neck.
By Andrea

I liked soccer because we were balancing the ball on our neck and it was kind of hard. I managed to balance the ball on my neck and I felt proud of myself!
By Alex

I liked the soccer because we played the Animal game and I had to be a camel and balance the ball on my neck which was a little tricky. But I got the hang of it! I liked the Cat and Mouse game because we had to try and kick the ball to the end when the teacher wasn't looking. It was funny because Ashton kept standing still even when the game had finished!
By Leland

I liked playing Shark Attack and loved being the fish. I didn't see Alex coming to eat my ball. It was funny because I nearly didn't get Leland's ball but then I did and I ate it!
By Tuia

I liked playing Animals and being a giraffe. I had to put my hands up high and put the ball above my head.
By Brooklyn

I liked the soccer because it was fun playing Cat and Mouse.
By Coredae

I liked kicking the ball.  Coredae was really funny when he kicked the ball.
By Naina

I loved playing Shark Attack because I was it. I was a shark and I had to pretend I was eating the balls. It was very funny!
By Kaitlyn

I liked Shark Attack because we had to show the sharks our tiny little bums! The sharks showed their strong muscles and then the sharks attacked the fish!
By James

I liked the Shark Attack because we had to get to the white cones before the sharks grabbed our balls.
By Shayne

I loved Shark Attack because someone caught me with the ball. I did a very good job on the first go because no one got me!

Goodbye Mrs Dowson

Room 14 were very sad to say goodbye to Mrs Dowson. We made her a card. Leland drew the the picture and we all wrote a message inside the card.  Then we sung a song called 'You are my Sunshine' which made Mrs Dowson cry!

Goodbye and Good Luck Mrs Dowson

Leland drew the picture on the card

We all wrote a message for Mrs Dowson

We are lucky to have a new office lady called Mrs Davy and she is there to help us now. Welcome to to Howick Primary School Mrs Dowson.

Mother's Day Messages

Room 14 made some special messages for their Mums for Mother's Day. We wrote and read our messages ourselves and then made a little talking photo using an app called Chatterpix kids on an ipad. We had a lot of fun decorating our photos with graphics.

Here are some Mother's Day messages to share with you:

The children were very excited making these movies and I know would enjoy making some more at home. Great for sending messages to grandparents too!
This is the app we used on our iPads:

Reading Games

Yay! We have finally had our mimio interactive whiteboard installed in the classroom.
Last week Room 14 used it to play some interactive reading games.

Here we are using the mimio board in our reading groups.

Burying The Time Capsule

Howick Primary School turned 50 years old last term and had a special jubilee celebration.
We have been learning about school in the olden days and comparing this to our school today.

Our big thinking questions for our Connections topic were:

How are things linked?
How are things the same or different?
How are we connected to people from the past?

Everybody in the whole school wrote a letter to themselves to put in the time capsule.
Then we had a special ceremony to bury the time capsule. It is going to be buried for 50 years.
When we are 64 years old we are going to come back to school to dig up the time capsule and read our letters that we wrote to ourselves when we were 5 years old! Wow!

Today Howick Primary School is going to bury the time capsule. When we get older we can dig it up and you can read my work. I feel excited.  By Ashton

First we watched the man put a frisbee in. Next he put a school uniform in and our letters. I will dig up the time capsule in 50 years. I will feel happy like the song happy.  By Zivan

Today we buried the time capsule in the hole and we had fun. We put a swimming cap and a frisbee and a dictionary and a ball and some reading books and our letters in. In 50 years time we will come back to school and dig it up. It will be exciting and fun and we will read our letters to everyone. Howick Primary School will be old and we will be old.  By Silas
